Follow our cake roll recipe and step-by-step instructions (yes, one step even involves rolling the cake in a towel!) to learn how to make this stunning dessert.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"426\" data-end=\"506\">Why do some people call it a Jelly Roll, while others call it a Swiss Roll?<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"508\" data-end=\"877\">Originally, most people referred to this cake as a jelly roll because it was baked in a \u201cjelly roll pan.\u201d Never heard of a jelly roll pan? That\u2019s because nowadays we use a 15x10x1-inch baking sheet or a rimmed baking pan. The term \u201cjelly roll pan\u201d has become less common, and so has the name \u201cjelly roll cake.\u201d Call it whatever you like\u2014we\u2019re ready to help you make it!<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"879\" data-end=\"920\">Step 1: Prepare the Cake Roll Recipe<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"922\" data-end=\"987\">Follow the instructions to prepare and bake the cake roll recipe.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"989\" data-end=\"1020\"><strong data-start=\"989\" data-end=\"1020\">Tips for Cake Roll Success:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1021\" data-end=\"1442\">\n<li data-start=\"1021\" data-end=\"1141\">\n<p data-start=\"1023\" data-end=\"1141\">Only use a 15x10x1-inch baking sheet. This will allow the cake to easily come out of the pan without tearing.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1312\" data-end=\"1442\">\n<p data-start=\"1314\" data-end=\"1442\">Don&#8217;t overbake the cake. As soon as the cake comes out of the oven, use an offset spatula to gently loosen the edges of the cake from the pan.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1704\" data-end=\"2039\">Invert the cake onto the prepared towel. The towel prevents the cake from sticking when rolling it up, and the powdered sugar keeps the cake from sticking to the towel. There&#8217;s nothing worse than a cake that sticks to the towel, ruining your jelly roll attempt! Immediately peel off the wax or parchment paper (if used) and discard it.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"2041\" data-end=\"2091\">Step 3: Roll the Cake with the Towel and Cool<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"2093\" data-end=\"2319\">Starting from one of the shorter edges of the cake, carefully roll the cake and towel together into a spiral. Yes, the towel stays inside the cake during this step! This helps the cake maintain its shape and prevents cracking.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2321\" data-end=\"2544\">Once rolled, leave the cake inside the towel and place it on a wire rack to cool completely (about 1 hour). While the cake is cooling, whip up your filling, or if you&#8217;re making an ice cream cake roll, soften some ice cream.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"2546\" data-end=\"2589\">Step 4: Spread the Filling and Re-Roll<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"2591\" data-end=\"2766\">Once the cake has cooled, unroll it and spread your filling evenly over the surface. Then, carefully roll the cake back up using the towel to guide it into a tight, even roll.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"2768\" data-end=\"2800\">Step 5: Chill the Cake Roll<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"2802\" data-end=\"3115\">As directed in your recipe, refrigerate the rolled cake in the fridge or freezer.
